How to solve your account is in a bad state

If you are seeing a message that says “Your account is in a bad state” in Excel, it could be due to a variety of reasons. Here are steps to resolve the issue:

Clear Excel Cache

Excel uses a cache to store temporary files and settings, which can sometimes become corrupted. To clear the cache, close Excel and navigate to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OfficeFileCache. Delete the contents of this folder and restart Excel.

Repair Office

Repairing Office can fix issues with Excel and other Office applications. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, find Microsoft Office in the list, click Change, and choose Repair. Follow the instructions to complete the repair process.

Disable Add-Ins

Add-ins can sometimes cause conflicts. To disable them, go to File > Options > Add-Ins. Select Excel Add-ins from the Manage dropdown and click Go. Uncheck all the boxes and restart Excel to check if the issue resolves.

Check for Updates

Microsoft regularly releases updates to fix bugs. To check for updates, go to File > Account > Update Options. Select to update Office automatically or manually, depending on your preference.

Reinstall Excel

If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall Excel. Access Control Panel > Programs and Features, find Microsoft Office, and uninstall it. Afterward, reinstall Office and ensure important files are backed up beforehand.

If none of these steps work, contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.
